Ondrej Vodicka, a certified personal trainer, has been in Kuwait for almost 8 months now, and has already made a difference in many people's lives. Over the first few weeks of summer I trained with Ondrej and my cousin, and with her constant support I was able to pull through the painstaking workout. Ondrej is from Czech Republic, and this is his first time in Kuwait. I got to know him through my cousin, and I am so glad that I did. He is constantly motivating me to push harder and reach my full potential when it comes to working out and being healthy. He has set a great example for me in terms of staying healthy in such an unhealthy world. I am so thankful that I was able to work with him and get an interview from such a sweet person who really cares about his clients' health. In this interview you get to learn more about Ondrej and his views on dieting and health.

-  What interested you in nutrition and how long have you been interested in this subject?
I was surrounded by healthy food since I was a child. My mother was very conscious about what we eat and she made sure we had only healthy food. I got interested in the topic I would say by the time I was in high school.

-  What are the craziest diets you’ve ever heard of, and have you tried any?
Craziest diets: liquid diet, the cabbage soup diet, the chemical diet, the detox diet, the cucumber diet.. And the list goes on and on

Crazy diets that I tried: chemical diet and probably the detox diet but I only lasted one day!

-  How would you define diet, and the purpose of one?

I don't like the word diet. I prefer to use "healthy lifestyle" which includes many factors such as food, exercise, positive mind and positive soul.

Following a healthy lifestyle will improve your general life. It will keep you healthy and happy.

-  What advice would you give a person who wants to start a diet?
Don't wait to start a diet. Start today.

-  Are there any fad diets that you recommend?
NO. Everything in moderation is the key to having a successful diet and lifestyle.

- Are there any resources that you recommend for people to learn more about being healthy?
Yes. Always use resources that are scientific. Not all websites base their facts on solid, scientific data (ex. Wikipidea is not based on facts). Googling everything is not the answer.

Anwar Al-Saleh

Student

Hi I’m Anwar Al-Saleh I’m 14 years old and I have never been on a diet.

How do you live a healthy lifestyle?

I live a healthy-lifestyle by eating well thought out meals and exercising at least twice a week by swimming and going to the gym and playing baseball.

What are some tips for living a healthy lifestyle?

My tips for people who want to introduce a healthy lifestyle are to find something that you enjoy and don’t start until you’re ready. If you’re not ready you're just going to continue trying and failing, and its not going to be good for your body.

Has being healthy always been a part of your lifestyle or was It brought onto you by influence?

My family has always been healthy because my mom who is a nutritionist/dietitian designs my meal and sports have always been a part of my life.

Dr. Lemia Shaban

Nutritionist/Dietitian

Dr. Lemia Shaban has been kind enough to take time to answer a few interview questions reguarding the feild she has studied and mastered in. She has a Ph.D. in Clinical nutrition and has the best advice for those who are interested in health. Hope you enjoy reading!

The Questions:

-   What’s your name?

Dr. Lemia Shaban

-  What have you studied/what are your degrees?

BSc biochemistry (Kuwait university)

MSc in public health nutrition (London)

Ph.D. Clinical nutrition (USA)

I'm also a registered dietitian (RD)

-  What interested you in nutrition?

I was first interested in medical school because i used to suffer from migraines and  believed that becoming a neurologist would help me better understand the brain, but when I turned 16 I went to see a neurologist in DC and realised that most of my problems were nutritionally related. That is when my interest in nutrition began.

-  What are the craziest diets you’ve ever heard of, and have you tried any?

We are generally  taught as nutritionists not to follow fad diets and hardly cover them in lectures, if at all. There are so many crazy diets that I have heard of and I'm not even sure they exist due to the obsurdity of some of them. The only one I would say I tried in my effort to "speak from experience" was the Atkins diet. I did lose weight and hated meat within 2 weeks of the diet.

-   How would you define diet, and the purpose of one?

I don't like the word diet. It has a negative connotation "die" and is usually associated with misery and food restriction, which no one enjoys doing. I prefer to call it lifestyle change and healthy eating.

-   What advice would you give a person who wants to start a diet?

Do not follow fad diets!!

-  How do you choose a nutrition plan for your clients?

My nutrition plan depends on why have they come to see me (are they here for weight loss? Do they have stomach issues? Possible allergies?) combined with what I see as their biggest nutritional problem.  Based upon the issue at hand I modify my nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.

-   How many clients do you see/meet with on a daily basis?

I try to see a  maximum of 4 or 5. My approach is very focused on the patient and my sessions are usually one hour long.

-  What are the reasons that patients come to you?

Diabetes, weight loss, weight gain, allergies, unexplained symptoms that are causing body distress, post cancer patients. I also see children.

-  Are there any fad diets that you recommend?

Not FAD diets no. I only suggest scientifically proven diets based on disease states. For example the DASH diet for patients with hypertension.

-  Are there any resources that you recommend for people to learn more about being healthy?

A good starting point is

1) academy of nutrition and dietetics (you may need to become a member to access everything) http://www.eatright.org

2) https://fnic.nal.usda.gov

Ms. Richardson

Teacher

The interviews have now expanded from personal trainors, to nutritionists, to students and now finally to teachers. This way you can get an idea of how diets are veiwed by everyone. Here we have the best social studies teacher of all time, Ms. Richardson! She has spoken to me and told me all about her diet regarding her health. Hope you enjoy listening as much as I did!

Soraya Ashlan

Certified Personal Trainer

The Questions:

-  What’s your name?

My name is Soraya Ashlan. I’m a housewife and a free lance personal trainer living in Dubai. I’m 37 years old and a mum of 2 boys age 5 and 3 years.

-  What have you studied/what are your degrees?

After graduating from high school I studied Fashion Design and Promotions and then went on to study Fashion Business at the London College of Fashion. In 2013 / 2014 I became a certified PT by completing the PTA Global  / Active IQ course.

- What interested you in nutrition?

After moving to Dubai and having my second child I started exercising and going to the gym regularly. I lost weight and started seeing positive changes in my overall physique, fitness, health and wellness. I became addicted to working out and couldn’t miss a day. I live in a family community surrounded by people into all kinds of fitness and sports. I also started seeing personal trainers in my gym and thats where I initially got the idea from. I used to think about how nice it would be if I could work in a job that I am absolutely passionate about, right where I live and in my own convenience since I have 2 small kids. My friend convinced me to go with it and thats when I decided to do my research to find the right course and to see whether or not I was starting at the right age.

- How would you define diet, and the purpose of one?

Diet is the kind / type of food people eat. It is the most important factor when trying to lose weight or gain muscle. Food is 80% of seeing those results therefore you cannot out train a bad diet.

-  Have you ever been on a diet and if you have what was it? Were they multiple?

After giving birth to both my kids I cut down on carbs by having 1 portion once a day and I would eat high protein / veggies and healthy fats

- Did they take a toll on your daily lifestyle?

Yes it’s not easy when you are following a diet plan specially if you have a family / kids that you are cooking for. I believe in “clean eating” where your diet becomes a lifestyle rather than something you have to follow on paper.

- What are the craziest diets you’ve ever heard of, and have you tried any?

I haven’t tried any crazy diets but I have heard of some like “The cabbage soup diet”, “Atkins”, “South Beach Diet and “ Dukan Diet”.

- What advice would you give a person who wants to start a diet?

I would advice them to eat clean by eating whole foods, or "real" foods — those that are un- or minimally processed, refined, and handled, making them as close to their natural form as possible. I would not tell them to cut a complete food group from their diet. Their meals should include all 3 macros -  lean protein, healthy carbs and healthy fats. They should eat 5 times a day - 3 main meals and 2 snacks in between. Their last meal of the day should not exceed 7.30pm and they should keep it lighter by only having a lean protein and veggies for dinner. Portion sizes should also be controlled to ensure they are not over eating.

- How do you choose a nutrition plan for your clients? or How do you get them to become healthy?

Depending on their goal I would advise them accordingly. I also make my clients accountable by getting them to keep a food diary for me to look at each week. This helps them monitor exactly what they are eating and helps keep them focused. It also helps me identify areas of improvement specially if the client is not reaching their goal.

- How many clients do you see/meet with on a daily basis?

I train around 3-4 clients each day.

- What are the reasons that patients come to you?

Clients come to me because they want to lose weight and get more fit. They also want the motivation to start and the guidance to make sure they are performing the exercises safely and correctly.

-  Are there any fad diets that you recommend?

No I don’t recommend any fad diets. Usually fad diets are very unhealthy and don’t  result in long term weight loss.

- Are there any resources that you recommend for people to learn more about being healthy?

I personally like bodybuilding.com, askthetrainer.com, muscleandfitness.com and http://www.precisionnutrition.com/blog

Vanessa

I am so lucky to have Vanessa- a personal trainer in Miami- answer a few interview questions all the way from the states. Even though I haven't met her she was still kind enough to share her thoughts on health- so thank you and I hope you all enjoy xx

The Questions:

- What’s your name?

Vanessa

-  What have you studied/what are your degrees?

Bachelors in International Business, I've studied FNS (fitness nutrition specialist) and currently studying to get my PES (Performance Exercise Specialist).

-  What interested you in nutrition?

I've always been interested in nutrition and learning about different sources of staying healthy.

-    What are the craziest diets you’ve ever heard of, and have you tried any?

Eating boiled chicken 6 times a day, yes I've tried it and it is not easy.

-  How would you define diet, and the purpose of one?

I don't like to use the term diet as it scares off a lot of people, I like to say healthy living, and the purpose of that is to inspire people to take care of their bodies.

-  What advice would you give a person who wants to start a diet?

The best advice to give is to not think too much into it, and just eat what you like in moderation, it's not about starving yourself or deprivation, you live one life and you need to enjoy it but you also need to know your limits on all that is bad for you.

- How do you choose a nutrition plan for your clients?

It all depends on the client and their goals.

-   How many clients do you see/meet with on a daily basis?

I don't have an exact number, as it constantly changes but it can range anywhere from 1-30.

-    What are the reasons that patients come to you?

Because of my reputation through social media.

-   Are there any fad diets that you recommend?

There are a lot fad diets I like, if I had to choose one, I would say the Paleo diet.

-   Are there any resources that you recommend for people to learn more about being healthy?

NASM has great tools for research.

Marwan Hreiche

Karate Instructer/Dad/Industrial Engineer

In this segment I chose to interview my father, Marwan Hreiche, to see his opinion on living a healthy lifestyle. My dad has always been conscious of his health ever since he was a child and that has always had an effect on my life just as much as his. He has always been a fan of sports- basketball, volleyball, tennis and more. While being an industrial engineer and a jeweler, he is also a Karate instructor, an activity that he has always been fond of and taught my sister and I to like as well. I have always looked up to my father and the way he takes care of himself and his health. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did interviewing my role model xx

Ps- for those wanting to know, his karate intsagram is @jkachi :)

John Leon

Personal Trainer

John Lenon- a personal trainer in Miami- has also been etreamly kind enough to answer a few questions on the topic of health and nutrition! Hope you enjoyy :)

John Leon

-Currently studying for my NASM certifications.

-What interested me in nutrition and fitness is being able to help transform people's lives. Not only for the physical purpose but for your own personal health.

-One of the craziest diets that I have heard of is "The Cigarette Diet", the basis of this fad diet is whenever you get hungry just light up a smoke. Cigarettes are a stimulant and have no calories. Obviously smoking leads to heart disease, lung cancer and many other medical conditions. The only weight loss program I have done is provided by Advocare, the 24 Day Challenge. It involves a 10 day detox followed by 14 day max phase where a participant is filling in their nutritional gaps.

-A lot of people view diets as being boring, torture or almost as a kind of punishment. It's not!  You will come to find that even after a couple of days your energy will increase and you will starting feeling better just by eating healthier and incorporating 30mins of fitness into your daily lifestyle.

-Nutritional plans change from client to client. I base it on the type of training they want to include from losing weight, toning up, leaning out or bulking(building muscle). That's when you can start figuring out protein intake, complex carbs, carb cycling, etc...

-Patients come to me because a lot of different reason from reaching a plateau in their fitness, advice, motivation or they just can't do it alone. In the end they all want the same thing...results.

-I'm not a big fan of fad diets because they're exactly that...A FAD. I want to teach you that you can still have your 5-6 meals a day but doing it the right way and when you add fitness into your life and cut down on the junk you will see results and a rise in energy and it will become a lifestyle and not just a FAD.

Juan Guzman

Personal Trainer

Juan Guzman

The Questions:

-  What’s your name?

Juan Guzman

- What have you studied/what are your degrees?

Bachelor of science in dietetics and nutrition. Currently pursuing Doctor of physical therapy post grad.

- What interested you in exercise?

Being the best and healthiest version of myself

- What are the craziest diets you’ve ever heard of, and have you tried any?

The hcg diet where people inject hormones into their system thinking it is going to help them lose weight, they are also restricted to only 500 calories a day. I'm pretty sure by starving yourself with only 500 kcal you're going to lose weight. I haven't tried any crazy dieting in the past nor do I plan on dieting in the future.

- How would you define diet, and the purpose of one?

A diet is a structured plan of eating to obtain a certain goal. Whether that goal is to gain weight or lose weight, a diet will lead you in the right direction.

- What advice would you give a person who wants to start a diet?

Don't. Diets are not sustainable in the long run and very few times do they actually work.

- How do you choose a nutrition plan for your clients?

Based on the food that they like and they don't like. I use a questionnaire where they scale their favorite foods on a scale of 1-10 and then me and my client will discuss the possibilities and willingness to follow a certain regimen.

- How many clients do you see/meet with on a daily basis?

Right now, I see anywhere from 50-60 clients a day. They are the members that I train at my Gym. However I do not have diet plans with all of them.

- What are the reasons that patients come to you?

Not really sure. I think it has something to do with the empathy that I have for an individual's circumstances that will draw them to me.

- Are there any fad diets that you recommend?

Nope

-  Are there any resources that you recommend for people to learn more about being healthy?

It's tough to say really. If I would have any recommendations it would be to consult with a registered dietitian

Ms. Eli

PE Teacher

-  What’s your name? (a little personal info about yourself, ie. age-if you want)

- My name is Eliana El Rahbany, I'm 28 years Old Lebanese citizen living and working in Kuwait. I teach HS PE at The American School of Kuwait and Coach at AC Milan Boys & Girls Football Academies.

-  What have you studied/what are your degrees?

- I hold a Bachelor in Physical Education from the University of Balamand and a Masters degree in Physical Education concentration in Physiology and Biomechanics of Physical Exercise from the same University. I have a PE teaching license from the University of Cambridge for IGCSE assessments.

- How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?

- I maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, 3 to 4 times a week, eat adequate food and stay active throughout my days.

- Have you always been healthy even as a kid or did you stat when you were older?

- I was an athlete since younger ages, so yes I was always active.

-  What interested you in being a PE teacher?

- What's a better way to stay active and practice your hobbies daily than to become a PE teacher! Plus, I like to make a difference and influence kids to follow healthier and more active life-styles. I like sharing information and teaching is a passion.

-  How would you define diet, and the purpose of one?

- A diet is following a nutritious meal plan according to your daily needs. The underlying scientific principle at work is "energy balance", which refers to the amount of energy you burn everyday versus the amount you give your body via food. Proper nutrition boils down to two things: 1- Supplying your body with the nutrients needed to maintain optimal health and efficiently recover from your workouts. 2- Manipulating your energy intake to lose, maintain, or gain weight as desired.

-  Have you ever been on a diet and if you have what was it? Were they multiple?

- I don't follow any general or common diets, I eat what my body needs and sometimes craves, all in moderation.

-  What are the craziest diets you’ve ever heard of, and have you tried any?

- The craziest diets are all over the place such as: The pasta-popcorn-chocolate diet by Lenny Neimark and the HCG diet..

-  What advice would you give a person who wants to start a diet?

- My advice is, don't follow any of those fad diets you read about in magazines that pushes you to lose crazy amounts of calories a week. Instead, go to a registered dietitian nutritionist and he/she can suggest additional calorie sources for healthy weight gain or a restricted-calorie eating plan, plus regular physical activity for weight loss, while still eating all your favorite foods. She can help you sort through misinformation. Learn how to read labels at the supermarket, and how to eat out without ruining your eating plan.  "Make it a habit to go to the gym."

-  Are there any resources that you recommend for people to learn more about being healthy?

- Some references: Lou Schuler (Books), Michael Mathews (Books), Tom Venuto (Books), Annals of Internal Medicine, Medicine and science in sports, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Nutrition, Medicine and Science of Sports and exercise.

I used to be 150 kilos which is morbidly obese. I studied nutrition to help myself and understand a healthy lifestyle.

I did all sorts of diets and they all do not work! The craziest diet is the water and cotton diet!

I dislike the word diet - i prefer to say healthy lifestyle where you eat everything in moderation and stick to healthy and fulfilling options.

If you want to lose weight, start by cutting out one thing at a time. If you eat a lot of sugar, cut the sugar out for three weeks! Your life will change. I choose a plan based on my client needs and their lifestyle. I cannot change a lifestyle overnight but i can expect to educate with time. I do not meet with any clients as my work is all virtual. I came up with the concept of virtual nutrition where clients join via natbasma.com and all forms of communication are available except face to face. They come to me because i am qualified and have the experience from my own method of losing 75 kilos. I show people on social media all the healthy options as well as how to workout and they become inspired to do so. I highly recommend checking out my blog as well as skinnytaste.com and bodybuilding.com

Sarah Sheldon

Favorite Cousin/Inspiration

- What’s your name? (a little personal info about yourself, age-if you want, job- also optional)

My name is Sarah Sheldon and I am 31 years young. I did my bachelors in psychology and social work and have a masters degree in early childhood special education and human development. Right now I am raising two beautiful girls.

- How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Growing up I was an athlete- loved trying out new sports and enjoyed being active. It wasn't until I had my two kids that I realized I need to be healthy as a role model for them, but more importantly, I need to be healthy for myself. Having kids definitely changed my metabolism and my body! Having a large pizza for dinner alone had to stop!

I started working out with a personal trainer after I delivered my second child to lose the baby weight. It's been about 2 years of working out 3 times a week. I like to incorporate kickboxing and hiit (high intensity interval training) exercises.

-What are the craziest diets you’ve ever heard of, and have you tried any?

I have heard of the cotton ball diet. I have never tried anything crazy.

- Have you ever been on a diet and if you have what was it? Were they multiple?

^^Did they take a toll on your daily lifestyle?

I tried many diets for The Diet Life 😂 The main one I did was a low carbohydrate diet for three weeks and then slowly turned that into a healthy lifestyle. I stopped drinking sodas and eating candy, which also benefited my kids. I love home cooked meals, so I make sure everything is prepared with fresh healthy ingredients. Having snacks during the day means fruits and nuts, not chips.

I still have my cheat meals during the weekend which keep me sane!

These little changes, plus the workouts (and raising my girls) have been very successful for me!

- How would you define diet, and the purpose of one?

I would say a diet is a set of rules to help someone lose weight. I think diets are to be used for short periods of time to kickstart a healthy lifestyle.

You should not be dieting all your life! I think that's why a lot of people crash and burn, then gain all the weight after the diet is "over".  Diets are a tool. Want to loose weight for your wedding, graduation, for the "summer body", then diets can do that. If you learn from the diets about portion control, ingredients and types of food to consume, then you have started to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

- What advice would you give a person who wants to start a diet

Do not do a diet because someone else wants you to lose weight!! Weight loss and body goals are very personal and you should focus on the reason you are dieting.

Then, think of the diet is feasibly possible. Don't pick a diet that is outrageous or unhealthy.

See a dietitian!!

- Are there any fad diets that you recommend?

The South Beach Diet and the new Atkins Diet are the two I would recommend. But, make sure you have someone monitoring your health!

-  Are there any resources that you recommend for people to learn more about being healthy?

It's good to check out many dietitians to get a different perspective on how they recommend for you to lose weight. Currently I have two friends that are with dietitians, but both their diet plans are completely different.

Jessica Al- Absi

- What’s your name? (a little personal info about yourself, age-if you want, job- also optional)

My name is Jessica Al-Absi, I am 39 years old. I have 2 children, one is 10 and one is 7. I’m a working mother, with a very busy schedule.

-With this busy schedule, how are you able to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

You have to make a choice to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you have to be absolutely convinced that this is what you want to and once you really make that choice it is very simple and there is so much information out there the is readily available. and now everyone is really up in all the homeopathic treatments and different things that are good for you such as herbs and spices and they are all available everywhere. so once you make the decision that you want to turn your life around and lead a healthier lifestyle than its pretty simple.

-Have you ever been on a diet?

I have. I have never done a full on diet where it is a strict regimen of this is what you can and can’t eat. I have kind of done my own combination of what I think is healthy for me and what i think isn’t, whats good for my body and what isn’t. But i do believe strictly that any diet that cuts out an entire food group is not a healthy diet.

-How would you define diet, and the purpose of one?

I personally don’t like calling it a diet, I think once you say I’m on a diet, psychologically it affects your behavior I think thats why saying I just want to change the way I eat and change my lifestyle and change what i put in my body. you know the saying “you are what you eat” and its true, if you have healthy skin its because of the healthy foods you eat, if you have a good figure its because of your healthy food choices.

I didn’t do much of a diet, it was more for Lent, and the way we fast for Lent is by being on a vegan food diet. The experience was interesting, it was a bit difficult, especially for someone like me who loves meat and chicken and fish. But once you make the decision to do a ‘diet’ you can’t really back out, and in my case it was for a religious reason, meaning that there was no way for me to cheat. I think its the healthiest lifestyle to follow, but i can t say that i could ever become fully vegan, but i could say that its a good thing to become maybe for a few days a week. it goo for your system and flushes it out, you’re eating all the healthy foods and when you go on a vegan diet you should be very conscious of the load up on oil, because a lot of the vegan foods have a lot of oil and are soaked in them.

-Did this really open your eyes to all the foods that are bad of you and made you change your mind about the food you eat?

absolutely, because when you decide you want to change our lifestyle you have to make the effort to do the research on whats good for you and whats not. You may come to realize that white sugar is pure poison, white flour is bad for you and when you really look into it there are so many alternatives. Cutting out white sugar doesn’t mean that you can’t have anymore sweets, i have jam thats made with agave syrup which is a natural sweetener. There are so many sweets made with natural honey you can even buy cereal thats organic an made with cane sugar, staying away from the white processed sugar and flour. for those who love pasta as much as I do, you can replace the white flour pasta with gluten free pasta which could be made with rice and corn, with mullet, with buckwheat, in this day and age there are so many options. you can even find vegan cheese if you really wanted to, you need to stay away from dairy because currently the research shows that milk was never meant to be consumed by humans its meant for baby calfs, its loaded with growth hormones. so dairy is something that you should try to stay away from.

-What advice would you give a person who wants to start a healthy lifestyle?

you need to commit, if you’re not ready to commit then don’t do it. and you need to do it far beyond reasons of “i need to lose a couple of kilos, or i need to lose 10 kilos” you have to ignore the weight issue but to a certain extent and think of it as an added benefit. you’re eventually going to lose weight the moment you become healthier. Its a mindset, the most important thing is that your mind needs to be made up that i really want to be healthy, it shouldn’t need to be about dropping a few kilos because when you come obsessed with that then every time you want to go on the scale and you realize that your not losing any of the weight after being healthy is a bit discouraging so the best way to do it is by saying i don’t care if minot losing the weight of not at least i know that I’m not putting bad things into my system; processed foods, anything that is in a jar or can. Control the quantity of red meat that you eat, and portion control is very important not just for losing weight but for being healthy. If you over eat its not good for your system to have what you would calla normal sized portion. Im not saying have half our plate, have the full plate but don’t necessarily go back for seconds, even though you feel like you may be able to go back and have seconds, load up on fruits and vegetables instead. This isn’t something new, we all know this information, it is just a matter of making a commitment to do it and actually  go through with it.

-Do you work out, and have you always been active as a child?

Yes i do work out, and i was an athlete my whole life then i stopped for about 15 years and i started feeling like my body was completely falling apart at sometimes my arms, my legs, i was flabby all over the place but i made a decision to go back to exercising because i wanted to look good not to lose weight. i felt like i needed to have the energy to get up in the morning and play with my kids. sometimes if i can’t workout on a specific day, to make up for it, i would drop down and do 50 squats while brushing my teeth in the morning, and another 50 at night, thats 100 squats right there, you get your heartbeat up and you workout your lower body. you know its simple, a 1 minute plank or 45 seconds and there you have a core workout. if you really want to be healthy its easy but you need to make a mental commitment to care about your body if you want that body to last a long time.
